Sunshine Coast man charged with selling fake gold bullion

Police were notified of the alleged scam after the 33-year-old Sunshine Coast man met with a buyer at a Bruce Highway service station on June 10.

The buyer told police they bought three gold bricks for an undisclosed amount of cash.

But when the bullion was tested by professionals it was allegedly found to be gold-plated copper.

Police believed another gold transaction was planned and were waiting at the Bruce Highway service station on July 6.

Officers arrested the Sunshine Coast man after he presented the gold bars and a testing device to the prospective buyer.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Mansfield warned potential buyers.

"If you're looking to buy gold, always use due diligence and go through a reputable gold trader who has an established business," he said.

"Don't fall for this scam and don't purchase gold off advertisements on social media," he said.

The man was charged with three counts of fraud, one count of attempted fraud and two counts of possessing tainted property.

He was remanded in custody to reappear at Maroochydore Magistrates Court on August 4, police said.

Police believe other buyers in the area may have been duped by the alleged scam and they urge those affected to get in contact.

Investigations are continuing.
