Kempsey's Bucket Brewery adds to its list of beers with Kempsch

Bucket Brewery's story is one well known the local community.

Starting out in Sam Preston and Tim Sproule's sheds, the business took off in 2017 when they began brewing at the old power station in South Kempsey.

From there, they've opened a bar at the brewery and held various events.

The pallet of mouth-watering selections has now grown with the introduction of their latest beverage, Kempsch.

The fresh taste embraces Kolsch, an ale named after the city where it's brewed in Cologne, Germany.

With that in mind the brewery decided Kempsch should be named after the town it's brewed in.

Similar to the use of the word champagne, Kolsch has a protected geographical indication within the European Union (EU), which means only a beer made within 50 kilometres of the city of Cologne according to the Kolsch convention can be named as such. This doesn't apply outside the EU though.

"Kolsch is named after Cologne, it's kind of like champagne where you're not meant to call it champagne if it's not from champagne valley," Sam explained.

"One of our venues asked us if we could make one and we decided to give it the local name and call it Kempsch."

"It's a light coloured beer, it uses an ale yeast which makes it different to a lager - a little more fruity but subtle."

Staying true to form, the design work was done locally by Macleay Valley based business Creative Jane.

The new brew was something that's always been on the mind of Sam and adds to the 16 currently available.

The Oktoberfest beer is scheduled for release next month for as long as it lasts with plans to hold another Oktoberfest event this year, COVID permitting.

More beers are on the way and plans are constantly in the work to grow the business with a base literally being laid with bigger things to come.
