WITH the Macleay now in week two of a COVID lockdown, residents living on their own have been able to host a local friend through the 'Bubble Buddy' program.

The Government implemented this initiative to help individuals with their mental health during these trying times.
Kempsey resident, Toni Barrenger, had to spend her birthday under lockdown on Monday, but luckily was able to have her best friend, Kristy Simonetta, come over and spend the day with her.
"Yeah it was really good that she was able to be here for it, we had some cake and just chatted," Ms Barrenger said.
"We are creatures that need to socialise, and I've definitely needed the company.
"I have a young child, so she'll go downtown for me and get food and stuff so I don't have to, it's been amazing."
A bubble buddy fits under the following criteria:
- 1 person (and their dependent children, if there are no alternative care arrangements)
- can visit you on more than 1 occasion
- can accompany you in undertaking exercise
- is not a nominated visitor for another person
- resides within 5km of your home.
Jimmy Burnett, who is born and bred in South West Rocks, didn't expect when he moved to the big smoke (Sydney) that he would be living under a strict COVID lockdown. Fortunately his old school friend and surf life saving buddy, Savannah Walker, lives around the corner, and has been able to bring some normalcy to his life.
"I think I'd go crazy without seeing her as I'm working from home, so she's the only person I see in real life," Mr Burnett said.
Their escapades consist of walking the dog and getting takeaway roast dinners, and these social interactions can go a long way.
Head of Clinical Research at the Black Dog Institute, Jill Newby, played a major role in the introduction of the program.
"Those in lockdown are at a great risk of experiencing loneliness and this can lead to additional stress, anxiety or an increase in depression," Ms Newby said.
"Allowing those who live alone to have one person to visit their home for companionship provides a simple solution to protect them from mental health issues developing or progressing."
