That was the case on Saturday at Kempsey after the Martin Bowe trained Wilson Place took out top prize.
In a time of 29.94, the Newcastle based greyhound beat out Kempsey trained El Roller and Kundabung in a tight finish.
Leading from start to finish, Wilson Place looked like it might be pipped at the post by El Roller on the home straight.
El Roller, trained by Shane Cartwright, had a wide berth on the final turn before cutting inside with a burst of speed with a chance to overtake.
However, Wilson Place was reacted accordingly, hitting the accelerator metres out to win by a margin of 0.75.
The Kempsey Cup carried $4000 in prize-money for first place.
Race track secretary Sam Simonetta was pleased to see visitors participating in the racing carnival.
"It's a good thing seeing a winner from away, this is a track they used to say was only for local dogs and I guarantee that dog would've never seen the track prior to the heats," he told the Argus.
"It was a good run and the one box helps a lot, particularly in Kempsey."
In the Carpet Court sponsored race six ($3000 for first place), it was the Brian Dwyer trained Kempsey Boy taking out the honours.
"It was a tough battle, the No.1 dog [Dashing Mary] jumped and led for most of the way before Kempsey Boy came from the outside and won by a head," Mr Simonetta recounted.
Throughout the whole seven race program there were two non-local trainers walking away with victory while the other five winners are from the area.
"Everything went well as far as racing's concerned," Mr Simonetta added.
