SCULPTURE in the Gaol's 20:20 Online Exhibition opened on Saturday, with 20 artists exhibiting 20 works for 20 days.

The virtual experience replaces the annual exhibition at Trial Bay Gaol and has the added functionality of providing a retail channel for artists. The format has proven to be popular with artists, both locally and from across Australia.
"We received almost 60 submissions, which made the task of whittling it down to just 20 works really difficult," exhibition curator Phil Nicholas said.
"The final selection is driven by diversity in subject matter, materials and style. I think what sets Sculpture in the Gaol apart is that we aim to reflect the full breadth of arts practice in sculpture.
"And there's no doubt we'll hold a second round of this online exhibition, as there are so many more inspiring pieces of work to share with our audience."
The online exhibition also offers viewers an opportunity to learn about the exhibiting artists through a series of virtual studio workshops and talks which will be broadcast via Sculpture in the Gaol's social media channels.
Exhibits range from pieces inspired by traditional approaches to sculpture, such as Roz Stampfli's Torso Relic, to the progressive, such as Kade Valja's Art Goggles feat. Hyperweave. The Art Goggles is a headset into which a smart phone may be inserted; a password is provided to the artist's YouTube channel on which tours of his murals are posted, which can be viewed in 360-degree virtual reality using the headset.
A People's Choice prize of $1000 will be awarded to the most loved sculpture, while a $100 prize awaits one lucky voter drawn at random. The prize monies were made available thanks to sponsorship by Coastline Credit Union as part of their Local Spotlight program.
