20 year old record broken as St Paul's College students throw long and jump high

The under 12's Discus record has stood since 2000 with a distance of 26.75 metres but young Tom Moffitt stood up to the plate and made the record his own with a whopping distance of 28.18 metres.

Sports coordinator, Heath Needs, said whilst this was the only record broken on the day it was still significant.

"Normally we have five or six records broken at an athletics carnival but Tom's effort was fantastic considering how long it's lasted," he told the Argus.

"Some records do last that long but as students get better they're becoming tougher and tougher to beat.

"Our longest standing record is from 1983."

High jump, long jump, javelin, discus and shot-put were the field events on the day with 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 metres running events.

Staff at the College noted participation levels were at an all-time high for the carnival with house points extremely close.

Mackillop were crowned the winners on 854 points whilst Edmund were runners up on 840 points. McAuley and Farrelly finished third and fourth on 766 and 760 points respectively.

Age champions for 17+ were Maddy Farrah-Halls and Blake Saunders with Nelly Barnett and Liam Askew runners up.
