A pump track is a type of off-road terrain for cycle sports such as bikes, scooters, rollerblades and skateboards and consists of a circuit of banked turns and humps.
It is designed to be ridden completely by "pumping" - generating momentum by up and down body movements - instead of pedalling or pushing.
Kempsey Shire Council's community projects officer Stephen Neale said the need for this type of outdoor facility was identified at a community meeting organised by Community Housing Limited.
"The meeting discussed the gap in facilities for children and youth, particularly in the West Kempsey area," Mr Neale said.
"The idea was then proposed to build a pump BMX track on an unused portion of Crown Land on the corner of Sea and Leith streets, West Kempsey.
"Council has since engaged with young people, residents, services and NSW Police regarding the development, and is interested in hearing from the rest of the community about the draft design.
"The track will be a safe, off-road recreational facility for young people and the young at heart to have fun and stay fit and active.
"It will also be used for bike safety and bike maintenance education.
"The community will have the opportunity to ask questions about the development at a council information stall at the Salvation Army Building on Leith St, West Kempsey on Tuesday July 21 from 3pm-5pm.
