Port Macquarie ready for return to night cricket at Oxley Oval on January 15

The oval hasn't seen night matches since 2015 and captains from both teams are eager to claim the May Kelly Cup T20 game on Wednesday, January 15.

Magpies captain Adam Broderick said he had played in one night game and was adjusting fielders ahead of the match.

"I've played one about five years ago at Wayne Richards Park and I really enjoyed it. I don't know what it is but it's just different," he said.

"We won't be changing the team around but you definitely change your approach. You set your fielders wider so that you have a chance to see the ball in the field.

"A lot of the guys haven't played under lights and they may find it harder to pick the ball up in the light.

"I think it's easier for spectators to come down because it's not as hot and it's outside other commitments. You should get club mates turning up because they're not playing their own cricket."

An extra banks of lights has been installed on the towers at Oxley Oval, enabling them to be upgraded from 100 to 300 lux.

Funding for the upgrade was provided in full by the NSW Government through round two of the Stronger Country Communities Fund.

"I've played a few night games at Wayne Richards and we don't really change much for night games," said Macquarie cricket captain Craig Roser.

"We'll just be focusing on stopping boundaries."

The Hastings River District Cricket Association round three match starts at 7pm on January 15.

A cross-code sporting facility housing a new amenities block with two change rooms, toilets, showers, disability access, a first aid and referees room, a canteen and viewing area is also under construction at the Oxley Oval.
