Conditions were generally okay although there was enough swell around to make some think twice about crossing the Macleay River bar. Around the headlands was for experienced anglers only.
There were 78 nominations for the event and 84 kg of fish was weighed in but, numbers at the weigh-in, BBQ and presentation were down on the usual and there were plenty of blank spaces on the results sheet.
With the swell running, most of the beach, rock and estuary fishing was done in the estuaries, producing mostly Bream. At sea, there seemed to be a lot of water between the fish.
Beach, rock and estuary junior "tenunda" angler, Finn McLean, was glad he went fishing with Pop coming away with several prizes including, Bream at 670 gm, Trevally at 750 gm and Junior Inside Angler of the Month with two species. The only other junior prize winner was
Jack Riach who won with a 550 gm Bream. As usual Jack demonstrated his usual enthusiasm for fishing by participating in both the inside and outside sections of the competition. His trip to sea returned him two more prizes with a Bream caught outside weighing 480 grams and Junior Outside Angler of the Month.
Among the big kids the prizes were spread around a bit:
- Bream - senior - Bob Shakespeare, 900 gm; lady - Tammy Sutherland, 775 gm
- Luderick - senior - Pat Halverson. Pat also won Inside Angler of the Month with 4 species.
- Tailor - senior - Mick Kane 2.140 kg.
- Mulloway - senior - Ian Black, 12.510 kg.
Apart from Jack Riach there were only two other prize winners in the outside section. Jeff Bryant won with a 2.330 kg Snapper and Geoff Gardiner won with a 1.510 kg Pearl Perch and a 1.330 kg Venus Tusk Fish. Geoff also won Outside Angler of the Month with five species. Congratulations to all the winners.
The next competition will be on the weekend of August 31 and September 1.
In late July the Club held it's Annual General Meeting where the past 12 months are reported on and future activities may be discussed.
Also, an election for the Committee, for the next year, is conducted. The Committee for the next year is: President, Bob Nips; Vice President, Grant Rowe; Secretary/Treasurer, Peter Askew; Club Captain, Ernie Lewis; Publicity Officer, Kim Hogno; Catering Officer, Jo Monsell; Weigh-In Officers' Trevor Cleland, Bruce Greene, Col Rowsell, John Wilkinson; Committee, John Edser, Chris Lanesbury, Todd MacMillan, Cary McPherson, John Monsell, Kevin Walker.
With a core group of long-serving committee members and a healthy intake of enthusiastic new members the committee has been functioning well over the couple of decades with everyone contributing "their bit" and this should continue. One thing that was disappointing about the recent AGM was the small number of general members in attendance. There will be another AGM in July next year. Mark it on your calendars.
