The 35-year-old driver heard a loud bang at about 1am and noticed sparks coming from the offside rear wheel of the trailer after checking his mirrors.
The driver stopped in a marked bay area about 300m north of the Hastings River Bridge and began to fight the blaze with two fire extinguishers but was unsuccessful.
The fire spread from the wheel to the car carrier.
Triple zero was called as other truck drivers stopped to assist.
NSW Fire Brigade was first on the scene followed by Rural Fire Service units from Sancrox, Lake Innes and Telegraph Point. Both lanes of the highway were blocked.
The fire was extinguished at about 3.30am.
The car trailer was severely damaged by fire. Four of the six motor vehicles on the car carrier were destroyed.
The prime mover was undamaged and the driver was uninjured.
The Pacific Highway is open but there might be delays while salvage takes place.
