SHINE provides the opportunity to 'shine a light' on local heritage by showcasing it through a number of unique special events being staged, many in the twilight or evening or with a twist on the concept of shining a light on our heritage.
"Tucked away in museums big and small all over the Mid North Coast are some rare treasures and some very everyday objects. All of them tell the story of the fascinating and varied history and changing lifestyles of our region. This rich heritage is found not only in the stories and collections of our museums but in our buildings and landscapes," director of Arts Mid North Coast, Kevin Williams said.
The fascinating stories of Trial Bay Gaol and Smoky Cape Lighthouse are illuminated through these exciting events:
'Life Behind Bars': Trial Bay Gaol Kids - Tuesday April 23, 3.30pm to 5.30pm
Find out what life behind bars was really like for the prisoners of Trial Bay Gaol. Locate special items and places within the old gaol with photo cards. Join in some old-fashioned German games, including Kegel bowling.
Search for the missing gaol keys to earn your release! Make sure to wear enclosed shoes and a warm jacket.
Cost: $15 adult, $10 child (school age). $40 family (2 adults/2 children).
'Dark and Deadly Deeds': Trial Bay Gaol Twilight Tour runs on Wednesday April 24, 4pm to 6pm
Join this captivating tour and discover the range of crimes committed by the Public Works prisoners who endured hard labour to try to build the breakwater in the late 1800's. Hear about the German internees during World War 1 housed in overcrowded cells, the young man who was lost to a shark attack and why they set fire to the Gaol. This tour is designed for adults and teenagers.
Remember to wear enclosed shoes, bring a warm jacket and a small hand torch. Cost: $20 adult, $10 child (school age), $50 family (2 adults/2 children).

Smoky Cape Lighthouse Tour - Wednesday April 24, 2pm to 3pm
Standing high on a narrow headland, Smoky Cape Lighthouse is surrounded by the stunning coastal scenery of Hat Head National Park. Built in 1891, this heritage lighthouse is one of the last designed by the Colonial Architect, James Barnet. Smoky Cape headland was so named by Captain Cook after he saw Aboriginal fires burning there in 1770. Cost: $15 Bookings essential 02-6566-6301.
