The infrastructure will replace dozens of above ground septic tanks through a centralised waste collection system.
Minister for Roads Maritime and Freight, and local Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, announced the new sewerage collection system this morning and said it will benefit businesses in the South Kempsey area.
“Industrial sewerage infrastructure will unlock the economic potential of the South Kempsey Employment Lands Hub,” she said.
“This is long overdue and has come at a perfect time for the Kempsey community. Our growth in factories will create employment opportunities and this is a step towards doing that.”
Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Minister for Small Business, John Barilaro, attended the announcement and said funding will grow the industrial estate’s contribution to the local economy.
“This is exactly what Growing Local Economies grants are intended to do and I congratulate Kempsey Shire Council on this funding win and look forward to seeing the growth and benefits that this project will generate,” he said.
“If we want growth in regional areas, then we need industrial growth and jobs. This funding will help to achieve this here in South Kempsey.”
Mayor Liz Campbell has welcomed the announcement of the funding for the South Kempsey sewer project.
“For years we have worked with the NSW Government to upgrade the sewer system in South Kempsey to cater for growth of local businesses,” mayor Campbell said.
“I’m thrilled this funding will allow us to deliver a centralised sewerage collection system that will enable larger businesses to operate from the industrial area.
“We will be able to see the benefits from this funding in the near future, and it will boost economic growth in the community.”
The new centralised system, to be owned and maintained by Kempsey Shire Council, will also remove the risk posed to the environment by septic tanks.
The expansion plans include the possibility of increased local tourism options with tourism related jobs, something that would not be possible without the improved infrastructure.
