Macleay District Motorcycle Club vice-president Michael Booth was pleasantly “surprised” by the turnout.
“It was an awesome result, there was a lot more people there than we expected which is great,” Booth said.
The club had been working hard for a long period of time to organise a race day on the grass.
Booth said the hard work was worth it to see so many people attend and have an enjoyable day.
“It was great to be able to race with no pressure, of course there was plenty of banter going on and you wanted to win but all of the racing was in good spirits and it was fun, which is what it’s all about,” Booth said.
“There was prizes up for grabs but it was definitely more social.”
Booth said competing on the grass event brought out riders who hadn’t been on the race track in a long time.
“There was probably about 30 per cent of people who are regular competitors which means about two thirds of people hadn’t been racing in ages,” Booth said.
“It was good to see them come out and get back on the bike.
“That's the good thing about grass racing, it doesn’t cost a whole lot of money like racing on the dirt track does. Pretty much all you have to do is turn up with your bike and gear on and start racing.”
Booth told the Argus the Macleay District Motorcycle Club is planning on having more events on the grass next year and potentially having a championship format.
“We have permission to race there six times next year so we are still looking at our options but we are considering holding four or five racing events in a mini series type format,” Booth said.
Booth gave a special thanks to everyone from the Macleay District Motorcycle Club who contributed to the day going ahead and also to the property owner Mark Haywood for generously providing the land to race on.
