The girls entered the last round of the competition in third place and were looking to continue their recent rich vein of form in games against the Beechwood Shamrocks and the Forster Hawks.
With semi final spots up the grabs the competition was fierce and the Magpies couldn’t afford to rest on the laurels and needed to post some wins on the board to ensure their place in the semi finals.
In the first of two games, the Magpies took on the Shamrocks. The Magpies trademark completion rate and determined defence was putting early pressure on the Beechwood team and the Magpies were first to score. The Magpies were as close to perfect as you can in a game of football and finished the game in convincing fashion with a 20-0 victory.
The Magpies entered the second game against the Hawks assured of a position in the semi finals. However with a impressive defensive record to uphold, keeping their opposition scoreless in their last three straight encounters the Magpies were determined to continue this excellent form into the semi finals.
The first half saw the Magpies once again dominate possession and field position and go into half time with a 8-0 lead. The second half saw the girls stretch this lead to 14-0 however a late lapse in concentration allowed the Hawks a late consolation try and 14-4 final score line.
Next week the Magpies take on Beechwood in the semi finals of the competition at 2.00pm. While the Magpies defeated this opposition convincingly in their last contest, the Shamrocks will have several key players returning for the semi finals ensuring an even match up between the two teams.
Victory in this game will mean more football on Saturday, with the successful team qualifying for the grand final later in the day at 4.45pm. The Magpies will head into the contest with a great deal of confidence following their recent undefeated run of six games, four wins and two draws. With the team moving from second last to second on the competition ladder in this time.
The Magpies would love to see lots of supporters from the Macleay turn out on Saturday at Wauchope to what will undoubtedly be a day of quality football to finish what has been a incredible competition and a significant boost for women’s rugby league on the Mid North Coast. Swoop you Magpies.
