The Nambucca Jazz Band visited Cedar Place yesterday and treated residents to an afternoon filled with the music of their youth.
Recreational activities officer Kristy McLeod said the event brings the residents together and allows them to have some fun.
“The social interaction of the day really makes a difference, it brings families and friends of residents together and allows them to have a dance and relax,” she said.
This is the second time this year Cedar Place has held a jazz day, with the one in April being held out on the lawn.
“We couldn’t hold it out on the lawn because of the weather but the residents are still really enjoying it,” Ms McLeod said.
“The music is also really good for the residents who have dementia, it helps them remember.”
“We have one resident, Carole, who remembers the music and gets up and dances. They absolutely love it.”
As well as the music, residents were also treated to a special afternoon tea of sandwiches, cakes and even pretend bubbly and punch.
Recreational activities officer, Donna Gill said the joy residents experience with events like this make it worthwhile.
“To be able to give them this happiness is really amazing,” she said.
“Even the residents who can’t speak will sing along to the music and some who can’t walk will tap their feet and clap their hands.”
“They really get a lot of events like this.”
