Hundreds of people gathered at the Kempsey Cenotaph for the Remembrance Day service on Sunday to commemorate the 100th anniversary since the guns fell silent on the battlefields of World War 1.

Kempsey-Macleay RSL sub-branch president Terry Hunt was pleased to see the community pay their respects by attending the service.
“We need to remember those who died for our freedom,” Mr Hunt told the Argus. “And honour all the soldiers who have served their country.
“Remembrance Day is set to remember not only the first World War but all the wars since and pay our respects to all of the soldiers who served.”
Mr Hunt said the service was exceptional and Kempsey High School’s school captain Jackson Korn presented a “very impressive and emotional speech”.
Mr Hunt is proud of all of the people who have served Australia and especially those from the Macleay.
Mr Hunt shared the heartache the Dornan family must have endured a century ago, to help understand the sacrifice people and their families made.
The Dornan family had four sons fight in World War I and only one returned.
“They gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we can have our freedom today,” Mr Hunt said.
