There was not a spare seat in the Council Chambers and it was great to see everyone in the room put their differences aside, and in true Aussie spirit, unite as one to celebrate in the ceremony.
Once we joined the candidates in the Affirmation to restate our commitment to Australia and its values, the room erupted with applause - it made me proud to be an Australian.
Congratulations to the Kazmi family from Pakistan and the Tavua family from Fiji in choosing to become Australian citizens.
On behalf of the community, we welcome you and offer our support as you make your home within our special part of this great land. Anyone thinking of becoming an Australian citizen can start the process by visiting the Australian Government’s Home Affairs website: www.homeaffairs.gov.au
2019 Australia Day Awards open
The 2019 Australia Day Awards will be held at the Slim Dusty Centre on Australia Day eve, 25 January and will include a citizenship ceremony. The Awards will be presented in four categories: Citizen of the Year; Young Citizen of the Year; Community Group of the Year; Volunteer of the Year.
The awards recognise everyday people who are great at what they do, or great at making our valley the best place to live. Do you know someone that contributes to the community or inspires those around them?
Often nominees are our quiet achievers, or maybe a workmate or next door neighbour.
Sometimes they can be industry leaders, achievers in sport, art or culture, or an unknown hero. You can make such a difference to the person being nominated, and it only takes one nomination for that person to be in the running for an Award.
