The work, about a kilometre in length east of the Summer Island Road intersection, will result in improvements to safety and driving conditions.
The road will be widened and have the pavement rehabilitated with a bitumen seal to complete the work.
The work forms part of council’s sealed road network renewal and rehabilitation program.
The total sealed road renewal program is valued at $5.4 million in the current financial year budget and is made up of around 15 projects across the chire including sections of Armidale Road, Hat Head Road, Betts and Innes Streets in East Kempsey and Marine Parade in Stuarts Point.
Council’s Director of Operations Robert Fish explains that several factors are considered when deciding which works to carry out.
“We have more than 700 kilometres of sealed road across the shire to maintain and in broad terms the investment of more than $5 million this year will renew about 11 kilometres of that”.
“Agreeing what we renew each year forms part of the overall asset maintenance planning and includes comparing the level of traffic volume, the lifespan of the road and current condition”.
“While in many cases there is a cost saving in the long term to replace a section of road rather than regularly trying to patch and repair it, funding limitations do not allow all roads to be renewed in the short term” said Mr Fish.
The work on Plummers Lane will involve the use of earthmoving trucks and heavy equipment and is expected to take about eight weeks to complete.
During this time temporary speed limits may be enforced and traffic control will be in place as required.
“We are asking that motorists take care and exercise patience in this area while these important improvements are being made,” advised Mr Fish.
