It involves an egg travelling to different preschools and primary schools in the area where the children read a story to the egg to help it grow.
Each time the egg is read to, it grows bigger.
Facilitator from Schools as Community Centres Karen Hall said the project is all about getting children excited about reading.
“Reading to the egg is much like when kids are read to, they learn more and grow. The idea behind it is to get children excited about reading,” Ms Hall said.
The project has now been running for two months and will end with a hatching ceremony at Kempsey West Public School on November 16.
“The animal that will hatch out of the egg will become the reading mascot for Kempsey which will visit school groups in the area,” Ms Hall said.
Kempsey Shire Library assistant Ruth Waite, who has been reading to the children, said they have been engaged in the project.
“The kids have been really good. The more they know it’s going to hatch, the more they get involved with reading,” Ms Waite said.
