About 4.35pm, emergency services rushed to the scene of the horrific accident south of Port Macquarie on the Pacific Highway, near Lake Innes, where they found a car, believed to be a Suzuki Ignis, alight adjacent to the northbound lanes.
The body of a man was found nearby. Formal identification is yet to take place.
Investigations suggest the car was travelling north before it left the road and struck trees before rolling.
A crime scene was established which was forensically examined.
Police from the Mid North Coast Crash Investigation Unit are conducting inquiries into the incident and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam vision to come forward.
They are also appealing for the driver of a white Hyundai i30, with a partial registration of DVH, that was seen travelling south in the northbound lanes of the Pacific Highway at Sancrox, to come forward.
Several people have reported seeing this vehicle travelling on the wrong side of the road, but it is unclear whether if this was a factor in the crash.
They are also appealing for the riders of two motorcycles who were seen travelling north near the location of the crash to come forward. One was wearing a black jacket with orange sleeves.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
