In front of the whole school, Luca brushed out her shoulder-length hair and following some nervous tears, she shaved her head.
The school spirit showed, with all of the students and teachers cheering Luca on.
Luca said she wanted to get involved and raise money for the foundation because the disease has impacted her family.
“My cousin had leukaemia, so it’s close to my family. I also wanted to shave my head at the beginning of the year, but decided to wait and raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation,” she said.
“I wanted to do something good and help people across Australia who suffer from the disease.”
As well raising money through the Lukeamia Foundation website, Luca also held a cake stall at the school today and has been receiving donations from family members, students, teachers and family friends over the past few weeks.
“A lot of people in my class really got behind it, and the school has been really supportive,” Luca said.
Luca’s dad, Julio Garcia, said he is very proud of his daughter.
“It’s close to our family and it’s nice to see Luca getting behind it. We’ll always support her and this decision was a very selfless one, she’s like that,” he said.
When asked about her new hair, Luca said she already likes it.
“I was so scared and nervous before we started shaving it. I’ve never shaved my head before, but I like it now that it’s done. It’s very practical,” she said, laughing.
Altogether Luca has raised over $800 for the Leukaemia Foundation.
