Five Kempsey PCYC boxers are pursuing national titles when they battle the best at the Golden Gloves in Brisbane this week.

The Macleay’s Ollie Eakin, Levi Langham, Nick Irvine, Alex Clegg and Kye Flanagon have been preparing for the prestigious tournament under the watchful eye of experienced trainer Adam Fathers.
“They have all shown a lot of improvement over the past 12 months and I am expecting them all to do really well,” Fathers told the Argus.
“It will be a good experience for them all regardless of their results.”
Levi is the most experienced of the group and he will head to the Golden Gloves as a defending champion.
The 14-year-old claimed the prestigious prize in the Under-15s 52kg division but he will step up into the 60kg weight class.
Earning another Golden Gloves title has been high on Levi’s priority list.
“Levi’s been training really hard for this event, he’s been sparring for hours at a time and up against some quality opposition,” Levi’s father Jason said.
“He will be up against some tough fighters but I am backing him to get the job done.”
Meanwhile the other four competitors will contest their first Golden Gloves and have only recently had their first amateur bouts.
Kye, 13, will fight in the Under-14s 42kg division and had his first fight in Queensland two weeks ago.
Ollie, 11, will compete in the Under-14s 44kg division and has had two bouts against the same opponent. The two split the decisions with Ollie getting the best of his opponent in their last meeting.
Alex, 13, will participate in the Under-14s 38kg class and has gained valuable experience in his first two bouts in the ring.
Nick, 22, will compete in the 69kg division and will step into the ring for his first amateur bout. Nick has been training for the past 12-months and is primed to make an impact.
The five boxers train on a daily basis.
