At about 8.50am on Wednesday, a blue Ford Festiva with Qld registration plates was detected travelling at 140kph in a 110kph zone, southbound on the Pacific Highway, at Collombatti.
The driver failed to stop when directed, and officers attempted to intercept the vehicle near the Kundabung rest area. At this time the driver allegedly braked harshly, made a u-turn, and headed north before turning into Mingaletta Rd.
The Festiva then rammed a farm gate, and travelled along a dirt track, hitting a further two gates, when police lost sight of the car.
A witness with a four wheel drive assisted police, taking a Highway Patrol officer, the police dog Mona and a handler to the offending vehicle, which had been abandoned.
The police dog then began to ‘track’ and soon the alleged driver and a passenger from the vehicle were found in the middle of a swamp, wet and cold. They were arrested without further incident.
The pair were taken back to dry land and were assessed by NSW Ambulance. The man and the woman were then taken to Kemspey Police Station.
The vehicle was found to have been stolen from Albion in Queensland on Sunday and was allegedly involved in numerous incidents in that State. The vehicle was towed to Kempsey Police Station for forensic examination.
Subsequent inquiries revealed that the 20-year-old male driver has four warrants outstanding in Queensland and is sought for other matters.
The pair are currently in custody and will be charged with a range of offences and traffic matters.
