Event organiser Jo Watts said runners and walkers taking part in the event at Crescent Head in September can support the KDVMC by doing their own fundraising.
The funds will be used by the KDVMC to construct a ‘bench seat’ to reflect all past, current and future recipients of the ‘Women of the Macleay’ awards.
The awards are held locally every year around International Women’s Day on March 8.
The ‘bench seat ‘will be constructed at Riverside Park, Kempsey and will be unveiled at an opening ceremony planned for International Women’s Day in 2018.
“We encourage entrants to consider doing their own fundraising leading up to the event or to make a donation to the committee on the day to support the great work that they do,” Mrs Watts said.
“The committee will have a marquee set up at the event on the day.”
The KDVMC was incorporated in 1994 and is made up of representatives from Government and Non-Government organisations in the Kempsey local government area.
The committee meets six weekly and aims to increase community awareness of domestic violence and support options through local campaigns. It also provides a forum for information exchange regarding issues of domestic violence affecting the local community.
The KDVMC lobby and advocate strongly for government funding to be directed into the Kempsey community to support local services in keeping victims of domestic violence safe.
KDVMC’s chair Shelley Baker said the money donated will assist the International Women’s Day sub-committee to construct the ‘bench seat’.
“The IWD subcommittee have been planning the design for the ‘bench seat’ in consultation with local Aboriginal women to be constructed down in Riverside Park,” she said.
“The ‘bench seat’ will be named ‘Galbaan ngalyngan barayn’ which is Dunghutti for ‘the women are shining strong today’.”
Any members of the community interested in supporting this project can contact Ms Baker at Kempsey Family Support Service on 65631588. Account details can also be provided if you would like to make a donation.
