Unexplained lights like flames in the sky

FISHING off the beach one evening, Phillip Sciacca saw unexplained lights appear far off in the sky.

The curiosity of this rational man was raised as the silent lights out at sea were not consistent with flares.

“I have fished all my life, but it’s only in the last two years I’ve seen these lights, and they are becoming more frequent,” he said.

He finds them quite confronting.

“They’re there, then they go, then suddenly they’re there again,” he said.

He referred the matter to friend Henry Kocon, a watch officer with Marine Rescue.

“I was on duty that night. I had a few calls from the public, worried they may have been flares,” Henry said, adding he didn’t see them that night himself. 

“I have seen them when I’ve been out prawn trawling. Initially they look like a flame, they appear then they disappear then they appear again. They don’t seem to be consistent with flares. They certainly make you wonder.”

Henry  contacted the authorities on the particular night in question but didn’t hear of any incidences on the water and the lights were not consistent with a vessel in trouble.

They have had reports before which led them to check with the RAAF about nighttime activities only to find nothing was scheduled.

“I think it’s somebody playing games with a drone, that’s just my opinion, but I’m never close enough.”

Phillip has now seen the lights appear from Charlotte Headland to as far north as Crowdy Head.

“I just want to know if anyone else has seen anything unusual.”
